Flat Tyre or Puncture: When Do You Need Recovery?
A puncture does not always mean a vehicle needs full recovery, but some tyre and wheel problems make driving unsafe or impossible. The safest option depends on the vehicle, location and condition of the wheel and tyre.
Do not drive on a damaged tyre
If a tyre is completely flat, visibly damaged or has come off the wheel, avoid driving on it. Driving on a damaged tyre can create additional damage and may make the vehicle less controllable.
What information should you provide?
Tell the recovery operator where the vehicle is, the vehicle make and model, whether the tyre is completely flat and whether the wheel itself appears damaged. A photograph can be useful if it is safe to take one.
When recovery may be the best option
If the vehicle cannot be moved safely, the wheel is damaged, the vehicle has no usable spare or access is difficult, vehicle recovery may be more suitable than attempting to continue the journey.
